My name is David Herrick, and I created this blog in 2008.
It was originally designed as a means of staying connected with friends and family as I was in the process of planting a new church (these were the days before I found Facebook and Twitter). But today, I have found this blog to be a wonderful place to process my thoughts on the messiness of this journey we call spirituality. That's why I call it "Junk Drawer Spirituality," because that's the best way I can describe my own journey with God. It has lots of stuff in it, there's some order and some chaos . . . it has cha-order :). Sometimes I will approach posts as a teacher on a topic I think people will be interested to learn about. Sometimes I will use this blog as a sounding board for my own struggles and journey. And sometimes I'll write on subjects unrelated to faith altogether (movies, music, culture, etc.), because I think all of it sits in that junk drawer I call my spiritual life.
Here's alittle background on me. I attended Texas A&M University, class of 2000, and earned a bachelors degree in Sociology. In 2001, I enrolled at Denver Seminary where I received a Masters of Divinity. During my time in Denver, I worked part time as a College Pastor, and later as full-time Interim Senior Pastor at First Baptist Church of Golden, CO. In May of 2007 I moved to the Chicago area to see where God was directing me, and God led me to Community Christian Church, in Naperville, IL where I hooked up with a team of people who were looking to plant a church in Schaumburg, IL. We planted Waterfront Community Church in October of 2008 and today I serve on staff as the "Servant of Community," overseeing adult small groups, our children's ministry, our teaching team, video and creative content, marketing, and our generosity team.
